Being able to friend nicked players

So I don’t know if this is a really bad idea or not but I had the idea of in game you could send a friend request to a nicked player. My idea is you would send it and it would appear as sent to the nick but if they accepted it then it would reveal the nick allowing nicked players to still keep their privacy but if your getting along with someone in game you can still reach out? I don’t know anyway what are you guys thoughts on this.
