Early-Mid Game Progression Advice

So I've been feeling lost on what's the best way to progress.
I've asked several players in game for advice but I'd like to see what others say here.

I'd mostly like to upgrade my combat skill to a higher level. Of course, I'm prepared to use AOTD once I get to Combat 18.
I currently do have AOTE, which doesn't really help with my Enderman slaying or killing spiders.
So what's another good weapon or another...
