Grass keeps turning into dirt

I have a flower minion layout that uses the cobble stone technique like Bangaa uses but for some reason whenever I afk the grass turns into dirt from the water and breaks the flower minion. I tried countering this by putting a grass block in between each minion with a sign on top so it stays a grass block forever and can spread to the other spots that turn into dirt but for some reason the grass won't spread to the dirt patches.
