Is there a way to pull ex. wood textures and set them as stone textures without changing the pngs?

This is very difficult to put into words, but is there a way to make Minecraft instead of using the wood texture for just wood, wood and stone (not what I'm using it for just example). This thought has been lingering in my mind for a couple of days. I've seen code that changes the way Minecraft renders things, "thicc mobs (optifine required)" on planetminecraft (funny pack btw), and I want to know if there a way to make Minecraft into pulling the same textures for one block?
