Is True Protection I worth it?

Currently struggling with Wolf slayer 4. If I use a mastiff with a shaman sword (I don't have Pooch sword unlocked), I get to kill the boss, but it takes a really long time; I only get out about 20k or less damage not to mention the very low crit chance. On the other hand if I use my giants sword with SA set I get way better DPS but i die in less than 10 hits, not to mention the boss's kids.
