Question about barrels!

Okay hi I’m pretty new to working with mods and plugins etc. and I’m struggling to find the info I need. Say I owned a Minecraft server with a large amount of people. I want to reduce fps lag and figure out a way to replace double chests with barrels, and I’m wondering what would be the easiest way to get the 54 slots in a barrel. I’m trying to avoid opening the barrel to go Into a “fake” double chest because I’m concerned about things being buggy and people losing their items. Is there any way to create a plugin that simply changes the amount of rows in a barrel? And if not, what would be the easiest way to go about this?
