Tips for getting Diamond in Sugar Cane contests?

What I've been doing to try and collect Diamond rankings in each crop type for Jacob's Farming Contests is buying a maxed out tool on the auction house, and putting perfect peridot gemstones on it to fully max out its fortune. I then build an efficient farm for said crop type (I usually look at pre-built layouts at MelonKingDe's garden for example), and with all of my gear, I'm usually able to get top 0 - 0.3% in every single crop type so far.
