VPN issues

Hi guys.
I use a VPN to help me stay secure, but I've read that using a VPN whilst playing Hypixel will result in a Security Ban. If I simply turn off the VPN before logging onto Hypixel, will I not get banned? Can I use the VPN while not playing Hypixel and be ok?
