What is splits in dungeons

I have been playing dungeons quite a bit and people keep talking about "splits", from my understanding, it is going into different rooms when there is more than 1 door in a room though im not quite familiar how and what exactly is the term used for. Also would appriciate uncommon dungeon lingos such as ie2, etc
