Build Custom Navigation ($navTree)

I can see that in PAGE_CONTAINER, the main navigation comes from $navTree.

I'd like to set that myself, from inside my controller/PHP, or maybe even by using a code event listener. The only thing is I only want this to happen on a specific template in my add-on.

Is this possible? If so, how might I go about that?

Any help/direction here would be much appreciated!
