Back in 2009 when Minecraft was released I was 26. Some colleagues of mine were talking about it and explaining it to me, but I didn't get it. So you just build? Hardly GTA V. Never touched it.
Fast forward to yesterday and 42 year old me beat the Ender Dragon with my 11 year old son. A first for both of us.
My son learned how to play from his cousin, he watched YouTube videos of people playing and creating, and he roped me into it. We started out just building things and it had me hooked. We'd sit and play together for hours and I'd play when he went to bed. If I didn't understand something, I'd just ask him.
There are times we'd get bored. We'd leave the game for months. Sometimes I'd just play again because I was paying for the Realm. We built up villages, bases, explored, created local landmarks. We never really bothered with combat in game, just when it came to protecting what we'd built. But eventually I talked him into playing to defeat the dragon.
We mined countless diamonds for armour, and built a big library to produce enough librarians to get the enchantments we needed. We explored the Nether for Blaze Rods and Ender Pearls, created Eyes of Ender and found the End Portal thousands of blocks from our base. Getting that far felt like an achievement in itself.
We went through the portal and were prepared enough to fight the dragon. Enchanted diamond armour and weapons. Blocks to tower up. Water to soften a fall. Potions to revive health. Carved pumpkins to avoid the wrath of the Ender Men, although, we got rid of the pumpkins almost as fast as we got rid of the dragon.
It felt like the accumulation of months work. It was great to see how happy he was, something he'd been able to take the lead on and guide me through. We also thought it was a lot easier than we anticipated and wondered why we'd put it off so long.
Then he turned to me and said "some people can do this in minutes". I shrugged. Getting to the destination is easy for some people, and by all accounts just the start of the game. For me up to that point had been about the journey. We have lots of shared interests but this has been one he taught me all about.
I remember seeing a guy racing his late dad's ghost car around on a rally game. He became good enough to beat the time, but he never did, because he didn't want to lose his dad's race. Sometimes I think about what will happen when I'm gone. Will my son come back to the game and wander around our villages and builds, thinking about the fun we had playing?
But then I remember that it's just some silly building game, and GTA VI is out soon.
